Athenian Beauty

Symbols of the Regime of the Colonels which ruled Greece from 1967 to 1974 can be identified in the Greek painter, sculptor and video artist Jannis Varelas’s collage as well as visual references of the late 1960s period in Greece. The duplicate dress given to Varelas (GR, b. 1977) was Scott Paper Company’s ‘Op Art’ paper dress, one of the most recognizable dresses of the paper fashion fad, which was cut and glued to be transformed into the dress worn by the central androgynous figure of the portrait entitled ‘Athenian Beauty’.
