The exhibition Polyrhythmia in Paper, a collaboration between ATOPOS cvc and the International Library of Fashion Research, explores the work of Issey Miyake through the lens of rhythmic layering, material experimentation, and embodied space. The exhibition, curated by Steffi Stouri is part of the affective archives program of ATOPOS cvc, engaging with its archive as embodied space through interdisciplinary research across artistic, scientific and sonic practices.

Inspired by Issey Miyake’s tender understanding of the interplay between the body and any material which had the potential to become clothing, the exhibition explores the layered structures, repetitions with variation, folds and patterns that create a visual or tactile rhythm not unlike polyrhythmic layering in music.

The exhibition showcases experimental paper garments which were donated to ATOPOS cvc, developed by Issey Miyake for the XXIst Century Man exhibition (21_21 Design Sight, Tokyo, 2008). It also includes publications and fashion ephemera from the archives of ATOPOS cvc and ILFR, as well as a video by Jackie Nickerson, which features Issey Miyake’s pleated garments in motion. The video was originally commissioned by ATOPOS cvc and now forms part of its archive. The exhibition will also feature a newly commissioned piece by Manos Saklas; a listening space activated by sonic elements, and rhythmic patterns drawing from Miyake’s polyrhythmic methodologies.

Show ’n Tell Sunday on Issey Miyake acted as an introductory event in anticipation of Polyrhythmia in Paper. It offered audiences an early encounter with key archival materials and research insights, providing context for the exhibition’s exploration of polyrhythmic structures and movement. This exhibition forms part of an ongoing curatorial dialogue between ATOPOS cvc and ILFR, building on the curatorial intervention Dissecting the Archive, by Else Thorenfeldt and Elise By Olsen at ATOPOS cvc in Spring 2024. Polyrhythmia in Paper is realised with the financial support of the Ministry of Culture of the Hellenic Republic.
