ATOPOS cvc × Office of Hydrocommons are pleased to present Purple — Ecologies of Saltscapes, a multidisciplinary research project by Annalisa Zegna and Mauro Diciocia developed during their residency on June 13th, 19:00-22:00 at Salaminos 72, 10435 Athens.

The project explores the hypersaline lagoons of Messolonghi and the ecological interconnections among extremophile organisms inhabiting saline environments. Following field research conducted in dialogue with scientists, environmental researchers, and local communities, the artists have developed an audiovisual installation combining video and field recordings that translate the micro-dynamics and macro-rhythms of the lagoon ecosystem.

Drawing inspiration from the Purple Earth Hypothesis—the proposition that early microorganisms may have used retinal pigments to harvest sunlight before chlorophyll-based photosynthesis became dominant—the project approaches hypersaline ecologies as living archives of adaptation and evolutionary possibility. The artists explore pigments associated with environmental stress, including carotenoids produced by halophilic microorganisms, micro algae and iron-rich microbial communities. These chromatic ecologies point toward forms of resilience emerging through adaptation to salinity, solar radiation, desiccation and ecological change.

Presented through the collaboration between ATOPOS cvc and the Office of Hydrocommons, the project situates artistic practice alongside ecological research and hydrocommons thinking. ATOPOS cvc × Office of Hydrocommons following on previous inquiries into hypersalinity, proposes vulnerability as a productive ecological condition and invites reflection on interdependence, care and coexistence as foundations for more relational environmental futures.
