Wednesday 14 December 2022 // 18:00pm (EET) – Conversation @ ATOPOS cvc

Join us for a talk by Langdon Hammer to be followed by a conversation on the first floor of ATOPOS cvc. James Merrill’s biographer will talk to us about the ailing body, precarity, vulnerability, the condition of poetry and art in times of crisis through James Merrill’s work.

Langdon Hammer is the Niel Gray Jr. Professor of English at Yale University and studies the history of poetry and its place in culture. He is interested in how poetry has been defined in principle and in practice, and in how the poet’s life has been imagined and lived. He is the co-editor of A Whole World: Letters from James Merrill and the author of the critical biography James Merrill: Life and Art. The book was widely reviewed and praised, and won the Lamda literary award for gay biography. His lectures on modern poetry are available on YouTube and the Yale Open Courses platform.

The event will be moderated by Stamatina Dimakopoulou (National and Kapodistrian University of Athens). Her research and publications are on avant-garde forms and media. She is co-editor and founding member of Synthesis: an anglophone journal of comparative literary studies. Under the auspices of CIVIS, the European Civic University, she has co-founded Τransitive Modernities, and is a member of Postracial Transmodernities and CARE: Care, Agency, Repair, Engagement in Alternative Modern(c)ities.
