ATOPOS cvc commissioned photographer Jackie Nickerson to direct the film ‘Issey Miyake Fête: Constellations’. The video was produced in collaboration with the Miyake Issey Foundation, Tokyo and is based on an idea by Vassilis Zidianakis. The inspiration of the video came from the ‘Constellations’ installation that was part of the exhibition ‘Ptychoseis=Pleats+Folds. Drapery From Ancient Greek Dress to 21st Century Fashion’ as well as Nickerson’s creative approach and documentation of the installation.
The ‘Issey Miyake Fête: Constellations’ installation was the epilogue of the exhibition ‘Ptychoseis=Pleats+Folds. Drapery From Ancient Greek Dress to 21st Century Fashion’ that took place at the Benaki Museum (Athens, 2004). The exhibition was organised by the Peloponnesian Folklore Foundation and the Cultural Olympiad, and was curated by Ioanna Papantoniou and Vassilis Zidianakis. The space design was by Tokujin Yoshioka and the visual direction by Midori Kitamura.
Issey Miyake Fête, is a line of clothing that is inspired by the exuberance of celebration. The line was born of Miyake’s desire to express joy. His clothes are pleated in a method unique to all Issey Miyake pleats: the garment is first cut and sewn then pleated afterwards. Issey Miyake Fête is, in a sense, a compilation of all the pleats created by Issey Miyake with his team.
The film was also presented at the 6th International Shibori Symposium (Tokyo, Japan, 2005) and the 3rd International Conference of Museology & ICOM-AVICOM Annual Conference (Mytilini, Greece, 2006).
